The Coalition of Carers in Scotland says: Here is an example of an Innovative project running in Ayrshire which could be replicated elsewhere and has a positive impact on carers health and wellbeing and their ability to access employment:
The NHS provided the local Carers Centre with 12,000 pounds to train 10 carers in a variety of complimentary therapies. Once trained these carers offer therapies free of charge to carers 1 day a week. They also earn an income for themselves and are able to work flexibly from home which fits around their caring responsiblities.

The Coalition of Carers in Scotland says: The Government needs to come into the 21st Century and revise Carers Allowance. Carers Allowance is an unfair benefit with many anomalies. For example, A patient receiving treatment for mental illness may spend days at home and nights in hospital as part of their treatment. In this instance he carer loses their carers allowance, when their costs are the same or increased.
- Carers Allowance should be universal without means testing
- The whole system of payments to carers needs to catch up with demands on carers in the 21st Century
- Carers benefits should not affect the cared for person's benefits
